In hindsight and foresight

Southisms [dot] com is almost turning a year old. The story began when a blogger friend, who used to be my Math tutor, asked me one day if I would like to write about music on a dot-com. And this question is pretty easy to answer, since as most of you know, I do everything for the “glam” of it. So I came aboard the Blog Davao network hoping to spend the entire year being able to give my web visitors a piece of my mind when it comes to music. It’s been an eccentric year in music for me and it’s been interesting writing about it every now and then.

So as forms of improvement, I’ll probably have my Music staples up by the end of next week. Meanwhile, the about me page is updated. On to another year ahead for Southisms!

It’s possible!

Okay, I’m an Apple fan stuck with a PC and that’s frustrating enough. And since one of the best parts of having a Mac is to achieve that aesthetics so easily missed even in the (what Mac users accuse) copycat interface of Microsoft Vista, I decided to spend the entire night last night attempting to give my PC that Mac look. And guess what? Call me a poser or poseur but get a load of this…

Civilization, or lack thereof?

As a blogger, it’s impossible not to keep yourself next to the world at large where all thing are so conveniently served to you as long as you have the moolah for it. And on one hand, you have to keep your neck up and scanning the terrain for new things (developments, or what-have-you) just so you have something to talk about. So is it possible for someone who’s so used to the kind of lifestyle that he/she surrounds him/herself with by keeping away from it?

Imagine a life without Internet, TV, Cellular Phone, Newspaper, Mp3 players, the like.

Unimaginable?

My Davao cuisine photo contest entry no. 1

This is my 1st entry for the Davao cuisine.

Davao Cuisine is an ambiguous idea. But when I began to listen to myself (and my gut), the first place I could think of was the eatery nearest to the hearts of a Davaoenyo’s POCKET. There’s a quaint little eatery somewhere between corner Anda (Now, F. Inigo) and Bonifacio Street, where I have my “starving artist” lunch times. Starving artists have starving pockets too! And there’s no place like “Faye’s eatery” to turn my world around to the happier side. Here’s my friend Chico who understands as well as I do what the feeling is like.

Here are my other entries for the Davao Cuisine photo contest:

Attention Davao City slickers! Need your help.

See, my girlfriend is a vegan.

Let’s just put that it’s not really easy getting around the city when we start asking ourselves, “Where do we eat?” Ordinarily, it’s hard enough answering the question as a meat-lusting individual with so many spots to choose from. But what happens when you not only know what place to choose, you consequently have not too many options to begin with?

My dilemma really is that I’m such a darling and I want to, as much as possible, keep my vegan dearest happy, since as she said more times than I can count that perhaps aside from yours truly, food makes her really, really happy.

But first before I start begging for specific advice about this, you might be asking yourselves what a vegan is? Or what veganism is per se.

Blog format change! Special episode: __.

Interesting note from Ren about the experience of ___ in ecstatic form; How inevitably ___ is an experience beyond our body, given that its idea comes from ex-stasis (ex: outside; stasis: shell, bodily form). The experience of ___ constitutes the inability to regulate an inner bodily energy (as it is, at the risk of redundance, “overseen” by an external force which goes beyond the boundaries of human discretion) and moreover, the experience suggests that the human capacity is too limited to be able to contrive conditions that can recreate ___. ___, phenomenologically is a universal design and not ours. People who have experienced ___ could say in superficial terms that, “I have lived completely” or at large, “The world is mine” et cetera, et cetera, but in reality, the truth behind these words emerge when we realize that logic evades the possibility of conquering that which is greater than us. The more apropos or more believable phrase would be, “It’s as if the world agrees with me”, “Why do birds suddenly appear/ Everytime you are near?” (insert scoff) or “It is the greatest thing to ever exist” (later on we’ll pander on to the thought this greatest feeling is in fact, the greater feeling and is the greatest insofar as space and sizeability is concerned). The next abstract of this phenomenology is not simply to confront how this happens/happened, (and reckon the utter futility of it when ‘how’ is really the domain of the universe). The more humane approach to this deconstruction is to ask the question why it happens.

ALAVET!

Here’s a video of Alanis Morisette’s cover of The Black Eyed Peas‘ song “My humps”. I’m shunning comments about how much a lot of people dislike this song. I just think it’s ridiculously brilliant. It’s a parody of how insipid songs, videos and pop culture can get. And the touch that Alanis put in to it just underscored feminist undertones. ALAVET!

House, House and the Homeless.

The past few weeks have been eventful thus far, and just as I was about to create a post plugging my friend’s new coffee shop, “Yellow hauz” (quaintly spelled that way, reflective of the playful personality of the owner), I do however feel that Ria of http://mydavaocity.com has more than adequately put what I wanted to say. So check out that link if you want an objective perspective of what a real connoisseur thinks about the place. If it came from me, I’d wax poetic about the place. I practically live there (here - because, hey! See what I mean?) these days.

So moving on, since this blog is mainly a Music blog, let’s get to the second chunk of this post which is to discuss my love-hate thing going on with “House” music. more…

Beach music?

Having been reminded of my “contract” which Andrew (of http://www.alleba.com/blog) and Ria (of http://politics.alleba.com) is well aware of, I am about to make a post even without really giving it much thought. But let’s see, I asked around and my misheard my muse saying “Beach” when she actually meant “Bleach” for possible keywords that’ll spark the content of this post. Not such a bad idea. It is after all summertime.

Let’s see.

Podcasting is my hero!

I don’t know what took me so long to figure this out, but I should have talked about podcasting ages ago. Podcast was initially introduced as an add-on to iTunes and iPod, however, over time it has emphasized its utility, turning it into the next best source of audio entertainment, and quite possibly, what I assume would be a big step this information age – credible information. As it is, it’s my current must-stay-online-for reason, what with all the variety of things you can actually have access to like music news, audio magazines and books, University lectures (I have some from Princeton and Berkeley – hah! Like I’ve ever been there) and the list goes on.
